Songs of the Summer 2020

Ah, summer: the time of the year when our pools open up, AC units finally kick on and we dust off our favorite shorts & sunglasses.  Coinciding with the end of spring is the endlessly frustrating and intense competition for a coveted title: Song of the Summer.  Each year, pop stars release singles at the start of the season to hopefully get that one hit song that rides us all the way through August.  While this summer is sure to be an unusual one (to say the least), the battle for Song of the Summer rages on, this time to top all of our Summer-isolation playlists.

  • Rain on Me – Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande

After months of rumors and anticipation, the collab of the year is finally here.  Lady Gaga is set to drop her sixth studio album this year, (Chromatica) which is already being hailed as a return to her dance roots.  So what do you do when you’re one of the biggest pop stars of all time? Drop a killer pop duet with Ariana Grande of course! It’s been a while since we’ve heard Ariana sing something this straightforwardly pop, and it’s well worth the wait.  The track bangs with the two songstress singing of their liberation, belting and harmonizing over an infectious house beat.  After the stripped-down record Joanne, an electrifying Super Bowl performance and snagging an Oscar for A Star is Born, pure pop Gaga is back. A welcome return, indeed.

  • Stuck With You – Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber

Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber are taking it slow to cure your loneliness with Stuck With You.  A quarantine inspired anthem (that was recorded a month into the pandemic), the latest ballad is a sweet, touching duet about staying in with your loved one.  The unexpected pairing of their sweet voices has already paid off, with Stuck With U debuting at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

  • Savage Remix (feat. Beyoncé) – Meghan Thee Stallion

You’ve seen the dance, you’ve watched all the tiktoks, you may have even filmed one yourself.  Savage was everywhere before this remix even dropped, making the latest release just icing on the cake; icing in the name of Queen B.  Beyoncé is less of a feature and more a complete atmospheric overhaul on this remix.  She slips in and out of the piano notes and bass with little riffs and “okays”, harmonizing over the already catchy track.  The result will make you feel, well, like a savage of course.

  • Do It – Chloe x Halle

Chloe and Halle Bailey have slowly taken over the world since they first went viral on Youtube.  These insanely talented sisters were quickly taken under Beyonce’s wing and have released flawless music, starred in the hit teen series Grownish and Halle is set to star in the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.  With Do It, it feels like Chloe and Halle are finally ready to give us a pure bop for us to jam to.  Still intact are their familiar harmonies and gorgeous tone, but this time over a bouncing dance beat with cheeky and fun lyrics to give you Instagram comment material for months.  Complete with a slick music video, Chloe and Halle are full-fledged pop-stars.  Just listen and get with it.

  • In Your Eyes (feat. Doja Cat)

If 2020 is proving to be anything in the music industry, it’s the year of the remix.  Our second on our list, In Your Eyes serves as The Weeknd’s third single from his acclaimed third album, After Hours.  This song, complete with a killer saxophone solo, feels like Stranger Things meets disco, and I mean that in the best way.  Hopping on this remix is our new favorite hitmaker, Doja Cat.  Hot off of her own #1 on the Hot 100 with Say So Remix (feat. Nicki Minaj), Doja cements her place in all of our music libraries.  Basically it’s Doja’s summer and we’re just living in it.
